Wildlife: Mammals

The Red River area of North Central Idaho is cradled between three Wilderness areas. The Selway Bitterroot Wilderness on the Northeast, the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness on the East and Southeast, and the Gospel-Hump Wilderness to the west. As a result, the region is home to a great diversity of wildlife species.

Big game species like elk, whitetail deer, blackbear, cougar, moose, mountain goat and mountain sheep live in this wilderness area.
Smaller mammals and rodents will include the porcupine, muskrat, beaver, yellow-bellied marmot, snowshoe hare, the red squirrel, northern flying squirrel, and the yellow pine chipmunk.

Carnivorous Mammals found in this area of Idaho will include the black bear, which also feeds on berries and roots, mountain lion, coyote, badger, striped and spotted skunks, lynx, bobcat, otter, wolverine and weasels. There are also a variety of bats and shrews
that inhabit
the general area. |
